Perioperative Management of Anticoagulation in Patients with Coronary Stents

6/13/2012

The perioperative management of anticoagulation in patients with coronary stents depends on the type of stent placed:

Bare Metal Stents:
< 30 days Defer elective surgery
> 30 days Proceed to operating room with aspirin

The decision to stop the aspirin should be made based on the risk of surgical bleeding vs. risk of thrombosis.

Drug Eluting Stents:
< 365 days Defer elective surgery
> 365 days Proceed to operating room with aspirin

The decision to stop the aspirin should be made based on the risk of surgical bleeding vs. risk of thrombosis.
