“Why Bother! The Comprehensive Pre-Op Panel”
National guidelines recommend minimizing pre-operative testing in lower-risk, stable patients undergoing non-emergent surgery, since it rarely if ever alters the perioperative course and is very costly. Through the ABIM Foundation’s Choosing Wisely® campaign, specialty societies have published lists of “5 things” that constitute frequently overused services. Excessive pre-operative testing has been identified in lists from the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Society for Vascular Medicine, and the American College of Radiology. However, excessive pre-operative testing remains common. This event, co-sponsored by 5 Sections of the New York Academy of Medicine, will address the appropriate use of pre-operative testing. Panelists will present the issues and describe initiatives within regions aimed at decreasing overuse in this area.
