Joseph T. Hallinan, a staff reporter for the Wall Street Journal, was the recipient of the 2005 NYSSA Media Award for his June 21, 2005 article “Heal Thyself, Once Seen As Risky, One Group of Doctors Changes It’s Ways”. The NYSSA Media Award was presented at the first session of the NYSSA House of Delegates on December 10, 2005.
The article focused on the fact that anesthesiologists have made significant effort to improve patient safety and that success in these endeavors has resulted in better patient outcomes and fewer lawsuits with an overall reduction in medical liability premiums. The article referenced the 1999 Institute of Medicine report that credits the specialty of anesthesiology for improving patient safety. The article states that the American College of Surgeons has started a program to study our Specialty’s focus on patient safety practices in order to improve surgeon’s liability statistics.
Mr. Hallinan highlights a number of the clinical and technical improvements that anesthesiologists have made to increase the safety to our patients and reduce negative outcomes. |
