MEMBERSHIP IS KEY - The New York State Society of Anesthesiologists, Inc., (NYSSA) is a medical specialty society dedicated to providing continuing medical education to its members and advancing the practice of anesthesiology. We are a component society of The American Society of Anesthesiologists, Inc. (ASA). To be eligible for membership, your principal professional activity must be in New York State.

By becoming an NYSSA member, you join a community of approximately 3,000 New York State anesthesiologists and more than 35,000 anesthesiologists nationwide. They advocate on behalf of both patients and physicians in formulating standards and guidelines to advance the practice of anesthesiology. Together, NYSSA members provide a powerful and effective voice for our specialty, both in New York State and nationally.

CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION

THE PGA - The NYSSA's annual PostGraduate Assembly (PGA) in Anesthesiology is recognized as one of the most prestigious clinical meetings in anesthesiology in the world. The PostGraduate Assembly offers over 130 presentations including panel case discussions, workshops, miniworkshops, problem-based learning discussions, case discussion luncheons with the experts, and focus sessions. Attendance usually exceeds 6,000 persons representing more than 50 nations.

Anesthesiologists attend the PostGraduate Assembly to learn and to present the latest technological and pharmacological advances. The PGA provides opportunities to meet one-on-one with distinguished authors and innovators in the field and participate in hands-on and interactive learning sessions. During the course of the five-day meeting, there is time for sharing ideas, gaining new perspectives, networking and enjoying the wonders of New York City.

As a member of NYSSA, you are automatically pre-registered for the general meeting sessions at no additional fee.

NYSSA - YOUR ORGANIZATION

EDUCATIONAL MISSION - The New York State Society of Anesthesiologists, Inc., is dedicated to elevating the standards of the specialty by fostering and encouraging education, research and scientific education, research and scientific progress in anesthesiology. The Society's mission is to ensure that its educational offerings provide a comprehensive integrated program of continuing medical education pertinent to the practice of anesthesiology.

GOVERNANCE - NYSSA is governed by its House of Delegates which convenes annually in December. The House of Delegates is comprised of approximately 120 members including duly elected Delegates, representing the eight geographic districts in New York State, the Officers, the Directors, the District Director to The American Society of Anesthesiologists, Inc. (ASA), the Delegate to The Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY), Residents Section Delegate, Past Presidents and Committee Chairs.

COMMITTEES - NYSSA accomplishes its goals through the efforts of its committees. Members who participate find professional satisfaction in volunteering their services and enhancing the future of anesthesiology.

DISTRICT MEETINGS - All eight districts hold regular meetings. These forums provide members with an opportunity to discuss Society business affairs and network with their local peers, and to hear speakers address timely topics of interest.

RESIDENTS SECTION - NYSSA encourages residents to become actively involved with issues that will affect their practice as they embark upon their career in anesthesiology. The Residents Section holds its own meetings, has its own delegate to the NYSSA House of Delegates and elects its own officers.

SOCIETY NEWS AND INFORMATION - NYSSA members receive SPHERE, the Society's quarterly publication. SPHERE provides members with information on advances and issues in the practice of anesthesiology, news about progress on legislative issues that impact the field, updates on NYSSA committee activities and notes of interest from other ASA component societies. SPHERE HIGHLIGHTS are now available to members only ONLINE! (Member Log-In is required.)

PUBLIC AFFAIRS - The New York State Society of Anesthesiologists supports an active public affairs program designed to educate the public about anesthesia and the role of the anesthesiologist. The Society compiles an annual Speakers Bureau List of more than 30 members, who have expertise in specific disciplines of anesthesia practice. The list is distributed to the local and national media.

In addition, the Society uses annual events such as Doctors Day in March to promote public education about anesthesiology through stories and reports in television, radio and print.

  • New York State Fair - the NYSSA exhibit at the New York State Fair in Syracuse plays an important role in the Society's public education and outreach efforts. Each year, the Society prepares new topics and recruits from membership the more than 60 volunteers necessary to staff the 12 days of the Fair. During the Fair, several hundred adults and children visit the NYSSA exhibit to talk informally with anesthesiologists about their concerns regarding anesthesia and surgery.
LEGISLATIVE ADVOCATES IN ALBANY

LEGAL COUNSEL - NYSSA members have a voice in Albany. We have an experienced legal counsel who represents our legal and legislative interests. Our attorney works closely with the Society's Government, Legal and Economic Affairs Committee to focus attention on issues affecting members and their patients. Counsel and the committee work together to:

MONITOR legislative activities that may impact the practice of anesthesiology;

LOBBY legislators;

COORDINATE NYSSA's annual Legislative Day for NYSSA members to meet with their legislators.

In addition, our counsel also:

Is AVAILABLE to speak at District Meetings as well as to the various Anesthesiology Departments throughout New York State;

PREPARES practice management articles;

SERVES as legal liaison with The American Society of Anesthesiologists, Inc. (ASA), and The Medical Society of the State of New York, (MSSNY).
