The New York State Society of Anesthesiologists supports an active public affairs program designed to educate the public about anesthesia and the role of the anesthesiologist. The Society compiles an annual Speakers Bureau List of more than 30 members, who have expertise in specific disciplines of anesthesia practice. The list is distributed to the local and national media.
In addition, the Society uses annual events such as Doctors Day in March to promote public education about anesthesiology through stories and reports in television, radio and print. The NYSSA exhibit at the New York State Fair in Syracuse plays an important role in the Society's public education and outreach efforts. Each year, the Society develops a theme based on current medical topics and recruits the more than 60 volunteer physicians necessary to staff the 12 days of the Fair. During the Fair, several hundred thousand adults and children visit the NYSSA exhibit to talk informally with anesthesiologists about their concerns regarding anesthesia and surgery. For Anesthesia Professionals, the NYSSA's annual PostGraduate Assembly (PGA) in Anesthesiology is recognized as one of the most prestigious clinical meetings in anesthesiology in the world. The PostGraduate Assembly offers over 130 presentations including panels, case discussions, workshops, miniworkshops, problem-based learning discussions, and focus sessions. Attendance exceeds 6,000 representing more than 70 nations. |
